Text Series was a response and protest to the German Artist, George Baselitz famously saying, “Women don’t paint very well." Johnson responds to Baselitz’s comments with her playful twist on his own style of upside down painting combined with the use of feminist quotes. In particular Johnson takes quotes from the feminist essay, "Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” by American art historian Linda Nochlin in 1971. This essay is generally considered the first major work of feminist art history and Johnson uses phrases from this to make her own statement about female painters.
